Amritsar, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : The Punjab police have made significant strides in combating illegal drug and arms trafficking in Amritsar, following directives from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. On September 29, police arrested three individuals as part of an ongoing operation aimed at enhancing state security.
Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced the arrests, revealing that police recovered 10.030 kilograms of heroin, two sophisticated assault rifles—an AK-47 and an AK-56—along with three magazines and ten live cartridges.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Sandeep Singh, 32, and his wife Kamaljeet Kaur, 31, both residents of Barar village in rural Amritsar. The third suspect, Kamaljeet’s brother Vikramjeet Singh, 23, hails from Gumanpura village in the same region. Sandeep Singh has a criminal history, with four cases registered against him related to the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Initial investigations suggest that the suspects were allegedly connected to traffickers operating from abroad, acquiring illegal weapons and drugs for distribution within the state. DGP Yadav stated that further investigations are underway to identify other individuals linked to the network and to uncover the full scope of its operations.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar detailed that the operation was executed swiftly based on specific intelligence. Teams from the Harinda police station conducted a targeted raid, apprehending the suspects with the prohibited items and firearms.
The investigation has revealed an unusual method employed by the suspects. They had leased nearly an acre of land in a guava orchard located just 500 meters from the India-Pakistan border. This location was reportedly used to receive drug and weapon shipments dropped by drones from across the border.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal noted that Sandeep and Kamaljeet were managing the smuggling operations, while Vikramjeet assisted as a courier for transporting the contraband.
An FIR has been registered at the Harinda police station under Sections 21, 23, and 29 of the NDPS Act and Section 25 of the Arms Act.
