Mamata Banerjee Leads Opposition Unity Efforts Against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

Kolkata, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : In Kolkata, the push for opposition unity to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is gaining momentum. TMC MP Sougata Roy stated that this initiative is spearheaded by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Speaking to a news agency, Roy mentioned that the Congress party has called for an all-party meeting on September 30, anticipating participation from several opposition parties. He added that those unable to attend the meeting could still join the movement later. The dialogue and unity among opposition parties on this issue will continue.

Roy also commented on the recent interim bail granted to Congress candidate Milan Pradhan by the Calcutta High Court in the Nandigram by-election. He described this as positive news, noting that Pradhan was arrested shortly after his candidacy was announced. Roy expressed hope that with the interim bail, Pradhan would be able to campaign for at least seven days.

Regarding the ongoing SIR (Systematic Investigation Report) controversy, Roy stated that no final decision has been reached yet. He accused Gyanesh Kumar of mishandling the SIR process, which has raised questions from two of his fellow election commissioners. This issue has sparked widespread protests and discussions across the country.

On the visit of BJP National President Nitin Naveen to West Bengal, Roy remarked that Naveen is engaging with party leaders and workers to strengthen their presence in the state. He emphasized that Naveen, being a new and youthful president, has held several meetings, but he believes this will not significantly alter the political landscape, as the RSS continues to steer the BJP.

Responding to Naveen’s comments about Mamata Banerjee, Roy pointed out that she has prominently raised concerns regarding the voter list and SIR issues, highlighting that around 9 million names have been removed from the voter list, prompting public outcry nationwide.

Looking ahead, Roy confirmed that Mamata Banerjee will attend the upcoming ED coalition meeting, along with TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He expressed optimism that the meeting would be productive and crucial for discussing future strategies among the opposition parties.
