Shillong, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister Preston Tynsong, who also leads the National People’s Party (NPP) in the state, has stated that the recent expansion of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) poses no threat to the NPP. He emphasized that all 33 NPP legislators are united, claiming a 101 percent cohesion within the party.
Tynsong noted that despite the BJP’s increase to ten members following the inclusion of eight former United Democratic Party (UDP) legislators, there will be no immediate changes in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government or additional space for the BJP.
Addressing concerns regarding proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), he highlighted that these issues are not limited to Christian organizations but affect all entities receiving foreign donations. Tynsong welcomed the decision to refer the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee, stressing the need to consider the concerns of non-governmental organizations, including those from the Christian community. He also praised the inclusion of Meghalaya MP James P.K. Sangma as a special invitee member of the committee.
During a campaign rally in Wahlingkhat village, Tynsong intensified his criticism of the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP), accusing it of spreading misinformation on social media and questioning its developmental work in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
He mentioned that the NPP is reflecting on its losses in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024 and the 2025 autonomous district council elections, attributing some of these defeats to the influence of social media. Tynsong argued that false claims circulating online have swayed voters and aided political parties in winning elections without factual support.
Targeting the VPP, which controls the KHADC, he demanded clarity on changes made since receiving the public mandate. “I want those in power to answer to the people. The public has given you the mandate to govern the district council. What changes have taken place?” he questioned.
