Manipur, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) attack that occurred on April 7 in Bishnupur district, Manipur. The agency arrested Thangamang Haokip, a resident of Churachandpur, on September 25. This arrest marks the second suspect to be apprehended in connection with the tragic incident that claimed the lives of two minor children and left another individual injured.
The initial arrest in this case was made on August 12 when S. Palala Thadou Kuki was taken into custody. He remains in judicial custody. The attack took place when unidentified militants launched an explosive device from a hilltop in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, striking the wall of a family home. Three family members sustained serious injuries, and the two children later succumbed to their wounds.
In addition to the IED, NIA officials reported recovering an unexploded improvised RPG near the crime scene. The NIA re-registered the case on April 23 under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Explosive Substances Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, leading to the discovery of Haokip’s involvement during the investigation.
Following his arrest, Haokip was presented before the Special NIA Court-II in Imphal, which remanded him to 12 days of police custody. The NIA continues to investigate the case, working to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the conspiracy and to uncover the larger network behind the attack.
In a separate development, the NIA also arrested Mustafizur Rahman in Guwahati on Tuesday. Rahman was taken into custody from a residence in the Azad Nagar area of Barpeta Road, Assam, during an ongoing investigation into alleged jihadist activities. This operation occurred nearly two months after his release from Guwahati Central Jail, where he had been held following his arrest by the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) on March 14.
During the search at Rahman’s home, officials reportedly seized his mobile phone. The NIA’s actions have reignited scrutiny on Rahman as the agency pursues its investigation into his alleged activities.
