Kolkata, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant arrest in connection with a murder case stemming from the violence that erupted following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. On Tuesday, authorities apprehended Jharna Mistry, a declared fugitive, in the Santoshpur area of South 24 Parganas.
Jharna Mistry is the wife of Sanjay Mistry, who is also implicated in the same case. According to a press statement from the CBI, she had been evading capture since an FIR was lodged in 2021 and had not participated in any investigative or legal proceedings related to the case. The CBI had previously announced a cash reward of ₹50,000 for information leading to her arrest.
This investigation was initiated following an order from the Calcutta High Court on August 19, 2021, which directed the CBI to probe incidents of violence that occurred after the elections. The case was registered at the Jagaddal police station in North 24 Parganas, based on a complaint from the mother of Shobha Rani Mandal, who was allegedly murdered during the violent clashes.
After a thorough investigation, the CBI filed a supplementary chargesheet against Jharna Mistry and 12 other accused individuals. Despite being declared a “declared offender” by the Barrackpore District Court, she managed to evade arrest until now. On Tuesday, she was presented before a competent court in Barrackpore.
The aftermath of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election saw widespread violence across the state, where the Trinamool Congress secured a decisive victory for a third consecutive term. Many allegations pointed towards Trinamool leaders and activists as perpetrators of the violence, resulting in fatalities and injuries among several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, forcing many to flee their homes.
