Bengaluru, August 30: Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot has accepted the resignation of Congress leader B. Nagendra from the ministerial position amid ongoing corruption allegations. An official notification regarding this was released to the media on August 29.
According to the notification, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar recommended the acceptance of B. Nagendra’s resignation from the Council of Ministers through a letter on Saturday.
Following this, Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot approved the resignation. He exercised his powers under Article 164(1) of the Constitution of India to accept B. Nagendra’s resignation from the Council of Ministers with immediate effect.
It is noteworthy that B. Nagendra had to resign due to alleged irregularities amounting to ₹89 crore in the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation.
The case came to light after a corporation officer committed suicide in May 2024, leaving a note that accused the organization of unauthorized fund transfers. Investigations revealed that significant amounts were allegedly transferred from the corporation’s bank accounts to various other accounts. Since then, opposition parties, particularly the BJP, have been demanding the minister’s resignation.
B. Nagendra has faced corruption charges before, which led to his resignation two years ago. A prominent ST leader, he stepped down in June 2024 while serving as the Minister for Tribal Welfare in Siddaramaiah’s cabinet.
After D.K. Shivakumar took over as Chief Minister, B. Nagendra returned to the cabinet on August 3. In the new cabinet, D.K. Shivakumar assigned him the responsibility of the Planning and Statistics Department.
