Prayagraj, August 30: The rising water levels of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers have submerged several prominent ghats, including Dashashwamedh Ghat. Traffic in the Daraganj-Nagvasuki area has been affected. Currently, both rivers are flowing below the danger mark. On Sunday, the Ganga performed a ceremonial bath for the large Hanuman idol, accompanied by a grand aarti.
Local resident Sandeep expressed concerns, stating, “The water is rising rapidly. People are moving their belongings. In just a day or two, the water has increased significantly. There is water on the roads, and the risk of it entering homes is growing. We are facing many difficulties.”
Another resident noted, “Every year, the water level rises. The ring road constructed during the Magh Mela is now submerged. Residents are struggling with these issues. As the water rises, the vegetable market also expands, reaching as far as the Daraganj police station. The situation becomes critical, with homes on the first and second floors getting flooded. People are using boats for transportation. The administration is providing full support.”
In Varanasi, the Ganga’s water level is rising at a rate of 4 centimeters per hour, reaching 68.94 meters, which is close to the danger mark of 71.26 meters. All 84 ghats are submerged, prompting officials to enhance flood response preparations and monitoring.
In Bhagalpur, Bihar, the Ganga has reached urban areas, flooding temple premises. ADM of Disaster Management Kundan Kumar stated that boats will be used starting tomorrow. Discussions are ongoing regarding the remaining silt. The situation is being closely monitored, with engineers and administrative officials camping in the area.
