Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth Appointed as New Chief of Army Staff

Mumbai, June 14: The central government has appointed Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth, the current Deputy Chief of Army Staff, as the next Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army. He will assume office on June 30, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who will retire on the same day.

Defense expert and former Major General GD Bakshi praised the decision, calling it an excellent choice. He noted that Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth is a highly experienced, respected, and decorated officer. He is associated with the prestigious 17th Pune Horse Regiment of the Armored Corps, also known as ‘Fakhr-e-Hind.’

Bakshi mentioned that after nearly 30 years, the Indian Army will have a Chief of Army Staff from the Armored Corps. He stated, “Dheeraj Seth is an exceptionally intelligent, experienced, and knowledgeable officer. The right person has been given the right responsibility at the right time.”

Major General Bakshi emphasized the need for technically strong leadership in the army today, asserting that Dheeraj Seth meets this requirement fully. His extensive experience across the Armored Corps, Artillery, and Infantry provides him with a comprehensive understanding of military operations.

Commenting on the aging aircraft in the Air Force, Bakshi remarked that it is essential to replace old planes over time. He noted, “Aircraft like the MiG-21 were introduced in the 1960s and are still in use in some areas. Continuing to fly very old aircraft poses a risk of accidents.”

Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth’s appointment is seen as a significant step towards the modernization of the army and addressing future challenges. Defense experts believe that his experience and technical acumen will play a crucial role in steering the Indian Army in a new direction.
