Brussels, June 27: The European Union has expressed its support for the recent agreement between Israel and Lebanon, calling it a significant step towards reducing tensions. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described it as a move towards peace.
On social media platform X, she stated that peace in the Middle East is unattainable as long as the situation in Lebanon remains unstable. She also thanked the United States for its role in mediating the agreement.
Ursula emphasized that the next crucial step involves disarming non-state groups and safeguarding Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The EU is prepared to support this process for long-term regional stability, while also mobilizing an additional €100 million in humanitarian aid for displaced individuals.
On June 26, a new trilateral framework agreement was signed in Washington, aimed at establishing a lasting peace framework between Lebanon and Israel, along with a gradual deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun hailed the framework agreement as a vital first step towards restoring full sovereignty for the country. He assured that the government would continue its efforts until the process is completed.
In a statement from the Lebanese presidential office, Aoun noted that this agreement would pave the way for displaced Lebanese citizens to return to their homes and lands. He clarified that Lebanon will not accept any form of occupation. Aoun also expressed gratitude to the United States for hosting and mediating the talks, as well as to Arab and allied nations that supported Lebanon throughout the process.
However, the agreement has faced strong opposition from Hezbollah. The organization’s MP, Hassan Fadlallah, stated that Hezbollah would resist any attempts to implement this framework and would not disarm.
