Kolkata Warehouse Collapse: Three Detained as Death Toll Reaches Five

Kolkata, June 24: Kolkata police have detained three individuals for questioning following the tragic collapse of a roof at a construction warehouse in the Taratala area on Wednesday night. The incident has resulted in five confirmed deaths, with several others suffering serious injuries.

According to police sources, those detained include the warehouse supervisor and two labor contractors responsible for supplying workers for the construction project. The supervisor has been identified as Mohammad Gulzar, while the other two individuals are Mohammad Ata Yul and Subhash Chaudhary.

Rescue operations are currently ongoing at the site, with concerns that some contract workers may still be trapped beneath the fallen concrete slabs and steel beams.

In the meantime, the Chief Minister visited SSKM Medical College and Hospital to assess the condition of the injured and gather information about their treatment. The Chief Minister confirmed the five fatalities and reported that a total of 20 injured individuals are receiving care, with two in critical condition.

He stated that doctors are making every effort to save the injured, and the government’s priority is to safely rescue any trapped workers as quickly as possible.

Following the incident, a team from the Indian Army has also joined the rescue efforts, alongside the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Kolkata police, and the West Bengal Fire Department.

Preliminary investigations suggest that there may have been flaws in the construction design of the warehouse. It has been reported that the previous board of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation approved this design on January 17.
