New Delhi, August 30: Following the devastating floods in Nepal, officials from the Telangana Bhavan are in constant coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, and Nepal Police. They are making special efforts to locate individuals connected to Telangana, ensure their safe return, and facilitate the identification and repatriation of deceased individuals to their families.
According to information from the Ministry of External Affairs, 449 Indian citizens safely arrived in Nepal via Tibet on August 29. Additionally, arrangements are being made for 397 more Indian citizens to travel through the same route on August 30.
Officials reported that the name and passport details of Allee Elisha matched the records at Telangana Bhavan. Her family has confirmed that they are in contact with her, and she is expected to arrive in Hyderabad around 10 PM on Sunday.
The Nepalese government has provided images and preliminary information about the deceased on the Nepal Police Disaster Portal. The identification process for bodies stored in the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahun, Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West, and Kathmandu is ongoing.
According to Nepal Police, DNA testing will not be necessary in cases where visual identification is possible. Once the deceased are identified and their relationship with family members is established, the bodies will be handed over to their relatives.
However, in cases where initial identification is not feasible, DNA samples from first-degree relatives, such as parents or siblings, will be matched with samples collected by Nepal’s forensic agencies.
Officials clarified that family members do not need to travel to Nepal solely for DNA profiling. They can send their prepared DNA profiles from their place of residence for testing. Nepal Police is developing a system to receive DNA profiles via email in advance.
The detailed process for identifying the deceased, repatriating bodies, and returning them home is still being finalized by the Nepalese government. Affected families are urged to seek necessary guidance from Telangana Bhavan or the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu before conducting DNA tests or traveling to Nepal.
Officials stated that information related to each case will be shared with the respective families and the public only after official confirmation.
