Kolkata, July 22: The Kolkata Police has strengthened its efforts to track criminals by joining the country’s Crime Multi-Agency Center (Crime-MAC) network. This initiative will facilitate the identification of criminals, even if they flee to other parts of India. The headquarters of the Kolkata Police, located at Lalbazar, has directed its officers to connect with this network.
Crime-MAC is a secure, web-based digital platform launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2020 to share data on crimes and criminals. Managed by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), this platform serves as a central hub for real-time information exchange among law enforcement agencies across the country, operating 24/7.
According to officials, police and intelligence agencies share information about crimes and criminals through Crime-MAC. Often, there is a communication gap between state police forces and central agencies. To bridge this gap, Kolkata Police officials have been instructed to regularly utilize this network.
Deputy commissioners and police station officers at Lalbazar have been directed to log in using Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) credentials. They must access the Crime-MAC portal at least once a day, or more frequently if necessary. This portal allows officials to send messages to multiple users and obtain information using the ‘search option.’
Lalbazar has mandated every police station officer to utilize the portal. This will enable the Kolkata Police to contact officials from any police station in the country when needed, aiding in the collection of information related to major investigations.
The system will assist in apprehending interstate criminals and identifying those hiding in Kolkata or outside the state. If police from another state recover evidence from criminals, that information can be shared immediately, facilitating investigations. Alerts at the national level will also be available through Crime-MAC.
