Kathmandu, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Jensen Huang, the CEO of American tech company Nvidia, has generously donated $10 million to Nepal’s Prime Minister‘s Disaster Relief Fund. This contribution aims to assist those affected by the recent catastrophic floods in the Bhote Koshi River area of Rasuwa district.
In a video message, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle expressed his gratitude to Huang. He noted that this donation has increased the total contributions to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to over 10 billion Nepalese Rupees, equivalent to approximately $66 million.
Wagle stated, “On behalf of the Nepalese government, I sincerely thank Jensen Huang for his generous donation to assist flood victims.” He emphasized that this significant contribution is both inspiring and a call to action for others to help.
According to the latest report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the devastating floods in Rasuwa have claimed the lives of 1,259 people, with 5,053 individuals still reported missing as of Thursday evening.
Since the disaster struck last week, Nepal has received various forms of aid from multiple countries and international organizations. Prime Minister Balendra Shah took to social media to highlight India’s immediate support, which has included the dispatch of 74 tons of relief materials in five phases.
He added, “India has also sent expert teams to assist in the rescue operations.” China has contributed NPR 300 million and 50 tons of relief supplies, while the Nepalese government has requested 30 Bailey bridges from China for affected areas.
Pakistan is providing 86 tons of relief materials, and Sri Lanka has pledged $1 million in aid. Bangladesh is also preparing to send relief supplies. The United States announced a $500,000 aid package, while Australia committed $1 million and is sending a team of experts and drone operators to Nepal.
The United Arab Emirates has already sent 83 tons of essential relief supplies and pledged up to $10 million in additional assistance. Qatar has also provided 40 tons of relief materials.
In terms of financial support, the United Kingdom has announced £5 million in aid. The European Union’s European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) is contributing €2 million, while Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the Czech Republic, and Norway have also announced various amounts of aid.
France has supplied emergency relief materials for 200 families in affected areas, with Luxembourg and Latvia also sending assistance.
Furthermore, the World Bank has pledged $167 million in concessional loans, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced a $5 million budget support grant and $150,000 in technical assistance.
