Security Level of Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin Reduced After Review

Chennai, August 30: The Tamil Nadu police have downgraded the security of former Chief Minister and DMK leader M.K. Stalin from Z+ to Z category. This decision follows a periodic review of threats faced by political leaders who receive security.

The assessment took place at the state secretariat, involving key officials such as Chief Secretary Sai Kumar, Home Secretary K. Manivasan, and Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal. They evaluated intelligence reports and Stalin’s security requirements.

Under the new arrangement, Stalin will still receive significant police protection. Security teams will be deployed in front of, alongside, and behind his convoy. This protective detail will include pilot, escort, backup, and close-protection vehicles during travel and public events.

Officials have described this change as a rationalization of deployment rather than a removal of security. The exact number of personnel assigned to Stalin’s security has not been disclosed. This new security arrangement will remain in effect until the next review, unless new intelligence necessitates an earlier assessment.

In Tamil Nadu, the security of VIPs and VVIPs is reviewed every six months. This process considers intelligence reports, the nature and urgency of threats, public presence, travel methods, and security needs. Based on committee recommendations, security classifications can be maintained, increased, or decreased.

This reduction in security comes a few months after Stalin and the DMK faced a significant defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party, which won 133 seats in 2021, has now been reduced to 59 seats, while actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s party, ‘Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam’, emerged as the largest party with 108 seats.

Stalin faced defeat in Kolathur, his own constituency, where he had served three consecutive terms. TVK candidate V.S. Babu received 82,997 votes, while Stalin garnered 74,202 votes, losing by a margin of 8,795 votes. Following this, Stalin has challenged Babu’s election in the Madras High Court.

Despite losing power and his assembly seat, Stalin remains the DMK president and one of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent opposition leaders. Officials assert that the review of his security was based solely on a professional threat assessment and is part of a state-level regular review process, unrelated to political standing or election outcomes.
