Kozhikode, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : The Kerala government is taking significant steps to shape its future. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and his cabinet members gathered at the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIMK) for a two-day strategic leadership workshop. This initiative, which temporarily set aside routine governance tasks, aims to redefine the state’s long-term development priorities.
Dubbed “Reimagining Kerala,” the workshop serves as a platform for collective brainstorming on the challenges and opportunities that will shape the state over the next decade. It is being held at IIMK’s Management Development Center and will conclude on Saturday.
The Chief Minister inaugurated the event by lighting a traditional lamp. In addition to cabinet members, participants include the state’s chief secretary, the Chief Minister’s secretary, special officers, and protocol officials. This initiative differs from conventional training programs; it seeks not only to enhance administrative skills but also to foster comprehensive discussions on long-term development and policy-making.
Rather than focusing solely on immediate administrative needs, the sessions bring policymakers together with academics and international experts. This approach allows for an exploration of long-term challenges and how policy decisions can lead to sustainable changes in people’s lives.
Discussions on the first day centered around some of the most pressing issues facing Kerala, including artificial intelligence (AI), an aging population, climate change, public health, employment, and the evolving economy.
One key topic was the potential for establishing Kerala as a health and wellness hub. The government is also considering a specific “Silver Economy Mission” to address the economic and social implications of its rapidly aging demographic.
Other subjects of discussion included employment, entrepreneurship, skill development, higher education, financial sectors, migration patterns, remittances, and the global branding of Kerala.
The program began with a session led by IIMK Director Prof. Debashish Chatterjee, focusing on transformative leadership in the age of AI. Notable international experts, including Dr. Devi Shetty, founder of Narayana Health, and Prof. Rajiv Shaw from Japan’s Keio University, participated in discussions on the future of public health.
While the state aspires to create a knowledge-based and technology-driven economy, it must also confront challenges such as an aging population, climate risks, changing migration patterns, remittance flows, and increasing financial pressures. The workshop aims to extend beyond immediate policy decisions to consider what Kerala should look like in the coming years.
The hope is to identify potential policy measures based on global experiences and evidence-based approaches. The “Reimagining Kerala” initiative is expected to yield ideas and policy guidelines that assist the government in addressing structural changes rather than just immediate administrative challenges.
Importantly, this workshop provides an opportunity for the cabinet and senior officials to develop a shared, long-term vision for the next phase of Kerala’s development.
