Karnataka Government Bans Obscene Dance Performances in Schools

Bengaluru, April 28: The Karnataka Education Department issued a directive on Tuesday prohibiting students from performing dances to obscene or vulgar songs during cultural events across schools in the state. The department emphasized that such activities undermine the dignity of education and negatively impact students.

This circular, released on April 16, applies to all government, aided, and private schools in Karnataka.

The circular states that schools are centers of education that play a crucial role in shaping children’s character, values, behavior, and overall development.

This order follows a memorandum from the president of the Bengaluru unit of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Swabhimani Bana.

The circular outlines several important guidelines for schools, including a strict ban on dance performances to obscene songs.

Schools are instructed to select songs that are inspirational, positive, and promote patriotism. Additionally, the songs should reflect Kannada culture, traditions, values, and dignity.

Moreover, schools are encouraged to prioritize songs that foster cultural and moral values among students.

The responsibility for selecting songs and dance presentations has been assigned to school principals and management committees.

The education department also stated that students should be encouraged to wear appropriate attire during cultural programs and dance events.

According to the department, children’s development, cultural engagement, discipline, mental health, and moral values begin at school, laying the foundation for their future.

The department noted that quality education prepares responsible citizens, but the presence of obscene songs and inappropriate dance performances at school events can adversely affect children’s mental health and erode moral values.

Officials expressed concern that students have been observed performing to inappropriate songs during academic and cultural events on several occasions.

Such activities could lead to increased indiscipline and damage the dignity and purpose of educational institutions.

To address this issue, the department has directed deputy directors (administration) of the school education department to take strict measures to prevent such activities.

A warning has also been issued that if any school is found violating these regulations, action will be taken against the respective principal or school management.

Officials stated that the aim of this initiative is to maintain a safe academic environment in schools and ensure that cultural activities contribute positively to children’s overall development.
