Ranchi, June 22: The political landscape in Jharkhand has become increasingly tumultuous following the defeat of the Mahagathbandhan’s Congress candidate, Pranav Jha, in the Rajya Sabha elections. Accusations of cross-voting among coalition partners have intensified, leading to a press conference by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) General Secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya on Monday.
Bhattacharya stated that the leaders of the 50 legislators who voted for the Mahagathbandhan’s Congress and JMM candidates are Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi. He further claimed that the 28 legislators who supported the BJP-backed independent candidate, Parimal Nathwani, are led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
He accused six legislators of betraying the coalition during the Rajya Sabha elections. However, when asked about potential actions against these legislators, he refrained from providing a clear response, choosing to sidestep the issue.
The Mahagathbandhan currently enjoys the support of 56 legislators in the Jharkhand Assembly, comprising 34 from JMM, 16 from Congress, 4 from RJD, and 2 from CPI(ML).
Despite this backing, Congress candidate Pranav Jha did not receive the expected support, garnering only 21 votes, one of which was invalidated. Reports indicate that five legislators engaged in cross-voting, while one vote was canceled. This situation cleared the path for the victory of BJP-backed independent candidate Parimal Nathwani.
Following JMM’s statements, discussions about the future of the coalition have surged in political circles. Questions are being raised about possible changes in the alliance with RJD and CPI(ML) or whether they might be shown the door from the government. However, no official comments have been made by any party on this matter.
It is noteworthy that just two days prior, Congress held a press conference with 12 legislators, asserting the unity of the coalition. Senior Congress leader and Jharkhand Finance Minister Radhakrishna Kishore emphasized that the Mahagathbandhan remains strong and unbreakable.
He remarked, “We will endure any poison if necessary, but we will not allow any harm to come to the existence of the coalition. We were united, we are united, and we will remain united.”
Kishore criticized some comments from the RJD as inappropriate, stressing the need to avoid unnecessary rhetoric during such sensitive times. He also highlighted the importance of a fair review of the recent electoral defeat.
