New Delhi, June 22: Atishi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, has targeted the government over the alleged failures in providing electricity to the public. This statement comes in light of accusations against Energy Minister Ashish Sood regarding the audit of power distribution companies.
Atishi asserted that the government has failed to deliver electricity to the citizens of Delhi. Power outages have become commonplace, and electricity rates have surged. She accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of making baseless allegations against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to divert attention from its own shortcomings.
She highlighted that the AAP government ordered an audit concerning the pension surcharge of power distribution companies in October 2024. This directive mandated the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) to conduct a special audit through CAG-approved auditors to protect the interests of over 20,000 pensioners of the Delhi Electric Board.
Atishi questioned why the government would order an audit if there was collusion between AAP and the power companies.
In response, Delhi’s Energy Minister Ashish Sood stated that the government believes there has been a connection between the power companies, AAP, and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. He claimed that when questions arose about the CAG audit of the distribution companies in 2015, the Kejriwal government went silent following a court ruling.
Sood emphasized that the government has resolved to prevent the burden of electricity rates from falling on the public and to ensure transparency. He noted that the decision to conduct a CAG audit and the companies’ appeal to the High Court indicate potential irregularities, and the truth will soon be revealed.
He also mentioned that the Delhi government has firmly represented the public’s interests. The High Court’s ruling has paved the way for the CAG audit of the power companies, which will aid in establishing transparency and accountability. The Delhi government is committed to ensuring quality and uninterrupted electricity for residents without imposing any additional financial burden.
