New Delhi, July 22: India’s Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan called for strengthening the nation’s healthcare system through a skilled, compassionate, and service-oriented workforce. He emphasized that quality healthcare and education are the two pillars of a healthy and developed nation. He stated that improving healthcare delivery, promoting preventive care, and training dedicated health professionals will require collective efforts as the country aims to become developed by 2047.
Speaking at the inauguration of the GKNM Group College of Nursing in Coimbatore, the Vice President described the institution as another milestone in the long tradition of public service provided by the GKNM Group. He praised the remarkable contributions made by the G. Kuppuswami Naidu Charitable Trust in healthcare and education over the decades. Established in 1952, its 50-bed hospital has evolved into a 750-bed multi-specialty institution while expanding its educational efforts from schools to higher education.
Highlighting the significance of the nursing profession, C.P. Radhakrishnan noted that nurses are not just caregivers; they provide patients with safety, security, and care. Their compassion and concern play an indispensable role in treatment, alongside medications. He urged students entering this profession to fulfill their responsibilities with confidence, compassion, dedication, and courage, while always maintaining the dignity of their profession.
The Vice President shed light on the ongoing changes in India’s healthcare sector, stating that the Ayushman Bharat program has gained global recognition for increasing access to quality healthcare services. He mentioned that under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, nearly 440 million people have received health insurance coverage of up to 500,000 rupees. He also highlighted initiatives related to senior citizens, noting that free healthcare services under the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana and the ongoing digitization of health services are making quality healthcare more accessible across the nation.
Emphasizing the importance of preventive healthcare, he called for coordinated efforts to eliminate anemia among women and children, ensure healthy pregnancies, and improve nutrition from infancy to adolescence. He also appealed for increased public awareness about organ and eye donation, describing these acts as life-saving and hope-giving.
C.P. Radhakrishnan stated that the GKNM Group embodies these ideals through its unwavering commitment to healthcare and education. He expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated nursing college will produce capable and compassionate health professionals who will significantly contribute to nation-building.
The Vice President congratulated the trustees, management, faculty, nurses, students, and staff of the GKNM Group, wishing the institution continued success in its mission to serve society through excellence in healthcare and education. He also expressed hope that the G. Kuppuswami Naidu Charitable Trust will soon establish a medical college that will produce skilled medical professionals dedicated to caring for the poorest and most vulnerable.
