Irans Internet Shutdown Sets Record Amid Ongoing Conflict with the U.S. and Israel

New Delhi, April 5: Amid ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, Iran has experienced the largest internet blackout in history. This information was reported by the digital monitoring group NetBlocks on Sunday.

In a post on the social media platform X, NetBlocks stated that Iran’s internet has been down for the past 37 days, totaling 864 hours. This blackout surpasses all previous outages in both duration and scale.

NetBlocks noted, “The internet shutdown in Iran is now the longest recorded national-level blackout in any country, entering its 37th consecutive day after 864 hours, making it significantly larger than any other similar events.”

Initiated on February 28, this internet shutdown has completely isolated the public from global internet access, while officials are selectively disseminating information through unilateral channels.

NetBlocks highlighted that while countries like Myanmar, Sudan, and Tigray have faced intermittent or region-specific internet shutdowns, no other nation has experienced such an extensive nationwide blackout despite having standard internet access.

In contrast, countries like North Korea, which have never connected to the global internet, remain internationally isolated and have always been offline.

This blackout coincides with ongoing missile and drone attacks on Iranian sites by the U.S. and Israel. In retaliation, Tehran has launched counterattacks on U.S. and Israeli bases in neighboring Gulf countries.

Amidst the conflict, Iranian authorities have also imposed restrictions on alternative communication methods, including satellite connections and VPNs, leaving citizens with limited or virtually no reliable means of communication.

NetBlocks emphasized the humanitarian impact of this shutdown, stating that families are unable to contact their loved ones during this critical time.

Despite these challenges, there are no signs of de-escalation, and the Iranian government has not indicated when full internet services will be restored.
