New Delhi, February 25: The Iranian government is once again facing protests from the youth. Recent demonstrations have erupted across various universities in Iran. In response, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani stated that while students have the right to protest, they must remember to maintain decorum.
According to Bangladeshi media outlet Dhaka Tribune, Mohajerani emphasized, “University students have the right to protest, but everyone must understand the red lines. Sacred symbols and flags are examples of these red lines that we must protect and not cross, even in anger.”
She acknowledged that Iranian students bear deep emotional wounds and have witnessed situations that can understandably lead to frustration and anger.
Local media reports indicate that university students in Iran held rallies both in support of and against the government on Saturday. The chants from protests that occurred nationwide in January have resurfaced.
Previously, violent protests in January resulted in thousands of deaths.
Protests began in December due to economic difficulties following a ban, escalating into nationwide demonstrations on January 8 and 9. The Iranian government has blamed the United States for these events.
Iranian officials allege that the U.S. seeks to incite unrest in Iran and desires a change in government, attempting to interfere in the country’s affairs and incite the youth.
The U.S.-based human rights news agency (HRANA) claims that over 7,000 deaths have occurred, warning that the actual death toll could be much higher.
Iranian authorities have acknowledged more than 3,000 deaths but attribute the violence to terrorist actions by the U.S. and Israel.
Meanwhile, spokesperson Mohajerani announced on Tuesday that a fact-finding mission is investigating the causes and factors behind the protests and will provide a report.
