Thiruvananthapuram, April 14: An intense heat wave continues to grip Kerala, prompting officials to issue temperature-related warnings across the state, except for the hilly districts of Idukki and Wayanad.
The Meteorological Department has warned that the heat is likely to persist, with no relief expected in the near future. Palakkad remains the hottest district, with temperatures projected to reach 40 degrees Celsius. Just a day prior, the district recorded a temperature of 39.2 degrees Celsius, marking the highest temperature of the season so far.
Kollam is also expected to experience extreme temperatures, with forecasts indicating a rise to 39 degrees Celsius. Other districts, including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod, may see temperatures soar to 37 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, temperatures in Thiruvananthapuram and Malappuram could approach around 36 degrees Celsius. Health officials have raised alarms about the increasing risk of heat strokes and dehydration under the current conditions.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak hours and to stay hydrated. Key recommendations from officials include wearing light, loose-fitting clothing and avoiding direct sunlight.
The prolonged high temperatures are beginning to affect daily life, particularly for those engaged in outdoor work. With the heat index consistently rising, vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health issues face heightened risks.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and reiterating the importance of public awareness and preventive measures. During this severe heat wave in Kerala, adhering to safety guidelines will be crucial in mitigating health risks and ensuring public welfare.
In the meantime, mischievous elements have been sharing unverified temperature warnings, prompting officials to take action against such misinformation and urging the public to rely solely on authorized reports. Following the holidays after the elections on April 9, many families are heading to hilly areas to escape the heat.
