Chennai, April 14: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that a severe heatwave will persist in the interior regions of Tamil Nadu for the next few days. The maximum temperature is expected to remain at least 3 degrees Celsius above normal until Friday.
The weather department has issued warnings about the continuation of hot and dry conditions. During the afternoon, many districts may experience an increased risk of heat-related illnesses and discomfort among residents.
According to the IMD, temperatures in the interior areas are likely to range between 39 to 41 degrees Celsius, while coastal regions will also experience high humidity along with elevated temperatures. In Chennai and its suburbs, the maximum temperature could reach 37 degrees, with the humid conditions making it feel significantly hotter.
Since Monday, the heatwave has intensified across Tamil Nadu, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees in several locations. Karur Paramathi recorded the highest temperature at 40.6 degrees. Vellore and Erode also hovered around the 40-degree mark. Madurai Airport, Namakkal, and Tirupattur reported temperatures close to 38.9 degrees, while Coimbatore, Madurai city, Salem, and Dharmapuri recorded around 38.3 degrees. In Palayamkottai and Tiruchirappalli, the mercury rose to approximately 37.8 degrees, reflecting the widespread intensity of the heat.
Despite the extreme heat, the meteorological department has indicated a possibility of some relief by the end of this week. Light rainfall is expected in select areas due to a low-pressure system extending from northeastern Bihar to southern Tamil Nadu.
Scattered rainfall is anticipated in the Western Ghats districts, delta regions, and coastal areas of Ramanathapuram until Sunday, which may provide temporary respite from the heat.
Officials have advised residents to stay vigilant, drink plenty of water, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and ensure proper care for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
With temperatures remaining above normal, a prolonged period of severe heat is expected in Tamil Nadu in the coming days, followed by a gradual change in weather.
