New Delhi, May 28: The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini has made history by successfully crossing the Atlantic Ocean. On May 27, the vessel reached Antigua, showcasing India’s maritime heritage and naval skills.
This journey is part of the ‘Lokayan 26’ campaign, marking an exciting and challenging maritime expedition for the Indian Navy. From Antigua, the ship will set sail towards America. Upon arrival, INS Sudarshini received a grand welcome from India’s Honorary Consul General Vijay Tevani and Brigadier Talbert Benjamin, Chief of Defense Staff of the Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force.
This achievement is particularly significant as it is INS Sudarshini’s first trans-Atlantic crossing. The last historic Atlantic crossing by the Indian Navy was accomplished by INS Tarangini in 2007. According to the Navy, the journey from Mindelo in Cape Verde to Antigua was the longest leg of the entire expedition, lasting a continuous 19 days. Notably, the ship completed most of this journey using traditional sails.
The vast waves, strong winds, and challenging conditions of the Atlantic Ocean posed continuous challenges. However, the Indian sailors overcame every difficulty through excellent coordination, constant vigilance, and traditional navigation techniques. INS Sudarshini commenced this historic journey from Kochi on January 20, 2026, and has successfully covered a distance of 10,000 nautical miles since departing.
The ‘Lokayan 26’ campaign aims not only to undertake maritime travel but also to enhance maritime cooperation with various countries, strengthen cultural ties, and showcase India’s rich maritime heritage on a global platform. This campaign embodies the Indian spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ meaning ‘the whole world is one family.’ After successful port calls in West Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Africa, the campaign has now entered the Caribbean and American phases.
During its stay in Antigua, the crew will participate in professional meetings, cultural events, and community activities. Following this, INS Sudarshini will set sail for its next destination at the Norfolk port in the United States.
