New Delhi, August 29: The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Friday that a third special flight carrying over 10 tons of humanitarian aid and a team of doctors and paramedical personnel has departed from New Delhi to Kathmandu. India is ramping up its efforts to assist neighboring Nepal following the devastating floods that struck on Wednesday.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that the flight, loaded with 10 tons of humanitarian supplies, has set off for Kathmandu. The aid includes portable generator sets, dignity kits, food packets, and water purification tablets. An 11-member team of doctors and paramedics, along with a reconnaissance team for tunnel rescue operations, is also on board. India will continue to support ongoing relief and rescue efforts in Nepal.
Earlier in the day, Minister Jaishankar met with 21 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu who were rescued and arrived at Delhi Airport from Kathmandu.
He expressed his emotions on social media platform X, stating, “I welcomed a group of 21 tourists from Tamil Nadu who were rescued from the floods in Nepal. Hearing their experiences moved me deeply. I extend my gratitude to the Nepalese army and the government for executing this rescue operation. I appreciate the efforts of the Indian Embassy in Nepal for coordinating their smooth return to India.”
These 21 Indian citizens were part of groups that undertook the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage through various travel agents.
India has been consistently sending aid to Nepal, including the deployment of a Bailey bridge to assist in rescue and relief operations. New Delhi has also established a control room at the Ministry of External Affairs that operates around the clock.
Ministry officials are in contact with state governments from where people traveled for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.
During a bi-weekly press briefing held in New Delhi on Friday, Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reported that 84 Indian citizens, including 63 working at the Trishuli-1 hydropower project, have been rescued so far. He further noted that 96 Indian citizens stranded in the Chinese border area have safely reached Nepal by road.
