Oslo, August 28: The Indian Embassy in Norway expressed its condolences on the passing of King Harald V on Friday, highlighting his selfless service to the nation.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, the embassy stated, “The Indian Embassy in Oslo deeply mourns the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway. He will be remembered for his selfless service to Norway, his affection, wisdom, and commitment to his people. Our heartfelt condolences are with the royal family and the people of Norway during this time of profound sorrow. May His Majesty King Harald V rest in peace.”
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sadness over the king’s death, extending condolences to the royal family and the citizens of Norway.
PM Modi recalled his meeting with King Harald during his two-day visit to Norway in May. The Norwegian king had honored PM Modi with Norway’s highest accolade, the ‘Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit.’
On ‘X’, PM Modi wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of the Kingdom of Norway. I fondly remember my meeting with His Majesty during my visit to Norway earlier this year, and I was greatly impressed by his affection and deep sense of service to his country. My heartfelt condolences to the royal family and the people of Norway.”
The Norwegian royal family announced in a statement that King Harald V passed away at the age of 89 on Friday. He died at 6:35 AM local time at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet.
According to Norway’s succession laws, Crown Prince Haakon, 53, immediately ascended to the throne as the new king.
