WHO Expands Aid Efforts in Nepal Flood Disaster with $150,000 Fund

New Delhi, August 29: The World Health Organization (WHO) is increasing its aid efforts in response to the recent floods in Nepal, releasing an immediate fund of $150,000. As assessments of needs continue, additional resources are expected to be allocated.

In a post on the social media platform X, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that within hours of the disaster’s onset, the organization dispatched emergency supplies, including inter-agency emergency health kits capable of supporting nearly 10,000 people for three months. The shipment also included tents, 10,000 masks, gloves, and hand sanitizers.

“Our immediate priority is to support health services for affected communities and restore disrupted health services,” he said. Additionally, the WHO is providing crucial coordination, monitoring, and technical support among partners to protect public health under the leadership of the Nepali government.

He emphasized that the flood-affected communities face significant challenges, making the ongoing support from all partners essential. The WHO stands in solidarity with the Nepalese government and people during this difficult time and is ready to provide assistance based on the country’s evolving needs.

Earlier, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced that a third special flight carrying over 10 tons of humanitarian aid and a team of doctors and paramedics departed from New Delhi to Kathmandu. India is intensifying its efforts to assist the neighboring Himalayan nation following the devastating floods that struck on Wednesday.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed on Friday that the third flight carrying 10 tons of humanitarian aid has left for Kathmandu. This aid includes portable generator sets, dignity kits, food packets, and water purification tablets. An 11-member team of doctors and paramedics, along with a reconnaissance team for tunnel rescue operations, is also on board the flight. India will continue to support Nepal’s ongoing relief and rescue efforts.
