New Delhi, April 3: India’s mixed trap teams have been eliminated from the medal rounds at the ISSF World Cup Shotgun. This marks the end of the Indian team’s journey in the first leg of the World Cup without securing any medals.
On Thursday, the India-1 team, competing in Tangier, Morocco, scored a total of 134 across three qualification rounds. The team comprised Prithviraj Tondaiman (scores: 24, 22, 23) and Kirti Gupta (scores: 22, 22, 21). Out of 33 teams in the competition, India-1 finished in 18th place. Only the top four pairs advance to the finals.
The India-2 team, featuring Kyan Chenai (scores: 25, 21, 22) and Rajeshwari Kumari (scores: 18, 22, 22), placed 25th with a total score of 130. The leading duo from Italy, Daniele Resca and Jessica Rossi, topped the table with a score of 147. Consequently, India concluded the competition without any success.
Over 270 athletes from 43 countries competed for five gold medals across five Olympic shotgun events. This included current world and Olympic champions eager to test their preparations ahead of a significant international season.
The 20-member Indian team includes several renowned athletes, such as Olympians Maheshwari Chauhan, Kyan Chenai, and Prithviraj Tondaiman, all aiming for a strong start to the international season.
The Indian shotgun team last participated as a full squad at the World Championship in Athens last year, where senior shooter Zorawar Singh Sandhu won a historic bronze medal in the men’s trap event.
On the first day of the qualification rounds at the Tangier Shooting Club, Olympian Maheshwari Chauhan scored 69, keeping her in contention for a spot in the women’s skeet event finals. Her teammates, Darshana Rathore and Yashasvi Rathore, scored 64 each, placing them 25th and 26th, respectively. Indian trap shooters Kyan Chenai and Ashima Ahlawat performed well but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the finals in their respective events by just one point.
Winners of the individual events in Morocco will earn coveted qualification spots for the ISSF World Cup Finals, scheduled to take place in Rome this December. The ISSF caravan now moves on to the first rifle/pistol World Cup stage of the year, set to be held in Granada, Spain, from April 5 to 13.
