New Delhi, 30 December. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will hold its first National Athletes Forum on 10 January in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The forum aims to strengthen athlete-led governance and accountability in Indian sports.

The forum will focus on key topics such as athletes’ rights and responsibilities, ethical and transparent governance, safe sports environments, integrity, mental health and well-being, anti-doping education, grievance redressal, and systematic career transition methods. Suggestions gathered during the discussions will be implemented for the welfare of athletes. The IOA has not yet shared details about the speakers.

IOA President PT Usha stated, “For the first time in India’s sporting history, athletes are being brought together through a dedicated national forum to directly influence governance. The forum marks a significant shift towards athlete-led reforms, accountability, and collective decision-making.”

She added, “It is impossible to maintain consistent top-level performance in sports without protecting the dignity, safety, and welfare of athletes. This forum clearly shows that athlete welfare is a priority.”

The Athletes Forum will ensure that athletes play an effective role in shaping policies that impact their careers.

MC Mary Kom, Chairperson of the IOA Athletes Commission, said, “Athletes understand the system from within. This forum provides a trusted platform to openly discuss challenges and solutions, ensuring athletes’ experiences are reflected in administration and reforms.”

Sarat Kamal, Vice-Chairperson of the Athletes Commission, added, “As athletes, we often feel the effects of decisions long after they are made. This forum changes that equation by giving athletes a chance to be heard before decisions are finalized.”
