New Delhi, August 21: A new chapter in the military collaboration between India and Argentina is about to unfold. A joint mountaineering team comprising 35 soldiers from both nations has embarked on an expedition to scale Mount Kamet, which stands at an impressive height of 7,756 meters in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.
This peak is recognized as the third highest mountain in India. The challenging mission was flagged off on Friday from the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi by Lieutenant General Ajay Ramdev, who serves as the Director General of Integrated Training and Colonel Commandant of the Army Service Corps. The expedition is being led by Lieutenant Colonel Chirag Chatterjee, with 25 soldiers from the Indian Army and 10 from the Argentine Army participating.
Experts believe that this joint mountaineering endeavor will not be an easy feat. The high altitude presents a significant challenge due to reduced oxygen levels, while the rugged terrain and unpredictable weather conditions will test the soldiers’ endurance and climbing skills. The mission will assess their physical stamina, technical mountaineering abilities, and teamwork. Notably, this is not the first joint expedition for the two armies.
This Mount Kamet expedition marks the third collaborative mountaineering effort between India and Argentina. Previously, the two armies successfully scaled Mount Aconcagua in Argentina in January 2025, followed by a joint mission on Mount Kun, which rises to 7,077 meters in Ladakh, in August 2025. The Mount Kamet expedition is a continuation of the growing military-to-military cooperation and professional relationships between the two nations.
While sending off the expedition team, Lieutenant General Ajay Ramdev emphasized that such joint missions extend beyond mere mountaineering. They foster mutual trust, camaraderie, and professional understanding between the allied forces.
He wished the team success in their summit attempt and a safe return. The arduous climb of Mount Kamet will test the courage and skills of the soldiers from both nations. Furthermore, this snow-capped peak will symbolize the increasing friendship and cooperation between the Indian and Argentine armed forces.
