India Raises Cyber Scam Concerns with Myanmar, Calls for Enhanced Regional Cooperation

New Delhi, June 1: India and Myanmar discussed the escalating threat of cyber scam networks operating in Myanmar’s border regions on Monday. New Delhi emphasized that this issue extends beyond the security of the two nations, highlighting the need for increased regional cooperation.

The topic was addressed during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar’s President U Min Aung Hlaing at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.

Following the discussions, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri spoke to the media, stating that India and Myanmar are collaborating to tackle the cyber scam issue. Over the past 18 months, more than 2,400 Indian citizens have been repatriated from the Southeast Asian nation, with efforts ongoing to bring back approximately 150 more individuals.

Misri noted, “We have been cooperating with Myanmar on this matter for quite some time. In the last year and a half, we have successfully brought back 2,411 Indian citizens trapped in cyber scams, particularly in the southeastern border areas of Myanmar.”

He added, “According to the latest reports, we are aware of more than 150 Indian citizens who are still caught up in some of these cyber scam cases. We are in contact with the Myanmar government to facilitate the return of the remaining individuals.”

Misri emphasized the importance of recognizing that when Indian citizens are stranded there, they are often trafficked through a third country. This situation not only underscores the necessity for greater bilateral cooperation, which is a security concern for both nations, but also highlights the need for enhanced regional collaboration on this issue. This point was reiterated in discussions and has been raised in various bilateral forums between the two countries.
