Jerusalem, June 22: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Monday that soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) deployed in southern Lebanon have complete freedom to act against any direct or emerging threats to themselves or residents of northern Israel.
He emphasized that the instructions given to the IDF by him and the Defense Minister are clear and remain unchanged.
Netanyahu remarked, “Our soldiers in southern Lebanon have full freedom to prevent any direct or potential threats against them or the residents of the north. There are no restrictions on the IDF in this matter. I stand with them, and the entire nation stands with them.”
He further asserted, “I maintain my position that we will remain in the security zone in southern Lebanon for as long as necessary to ensure the safety of residents in the north and all Israeli citizens.”
Earlier in the day, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance informed the media about the progress of ongoing talks between the U.S. and Iran in Switzerland.
Regarding the Lebanon issue, Vance noted that there has been “significant progress” in the discussions. He mentioned that a “de-confliction mechanism” is being developed to prevent clashes between Israel and Hezbollah from escalating into a larger regional conflict.
He stated, “I believe we have been quite successful in establishing what we refer to as a ‘de-confliction mechanism.’”
When asked if Washington wants the Israeli army to withdraw from southern Lebanon, Vance replied, “We want Israel’s security to be maintained while also respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty. Discussions on this topic will continue.”
He also mentioned that the U.S. remains in contact with regional partners, including Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, during the talks.
Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz had ordered the military to implement a ceasefire in Lebanon on Saturday.
