Rajkot: India’s trade negotiations with the European Union (EU) have reached the final stages, and bilateral trade discussions with the United States are also ongoing. This was stated by Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal during the Regional MSME Conclave held on Monday in Rajkot.
Minister Goyal, who recently returned from Brussels, met with Maros Sefcovic, the EU Trade and Economic Security Commissioner, to discuss the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The focus of India’s efforts is to secure zero-duty access for labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, garments, gemstones and jewellery, and handicrafts.
Sharing an update on social media platform ‘X,’ Goyal said, “During these talks, we discussed key areas of the proposed agreement. We reiterated our commitment to a rules-based trading framework and a modern economic partnership that safeguards the interests of farmers and MSMEs, while integrating Indian industries into global supply chains.”
This statement comes amid ongoing trade talks between India and the US, following the recent appointment of American Ambassador Sergio Gore in New Delhi. Ambassador Gore confirmed that trade negotiations are progressing steadily, with the next meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
Speaking to staff and journalists at the US Embassy, Gore conveyed greetings from US President Donald Trump to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasised the genuine friendship between the two leaders and highlighted that the India-US relationship is built not only on mutual interests but also on strong ties at the highest levels.
Gore added, “True friends may disagree on several issues, but ultimately resolve their differences.” He further noted that trade remains a vital part of India-US relations, alongside ongoing cooperation in security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health sectors.
