Chennai, April 4: Shreyas Iyer, captain of the Punjab Kings, has been fined for the second consecutive match due to a slow over rate. In the game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, the Punjab Kings failed to complete their 20 overs within the stipulated time, resulting in a penalty for Iyer.
According to a statement from the IPL, “As this is the second violation of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, related to minimum over-rate offenses, Iyer has been fined ₹24 lakh. The remaining members of the playing eleven, including the impact player, will face a fine of either ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lower.”
Punjab Kings played their first match of the season on March 31 against Gujarat Titans. Although they won that match, their over rate was also slow during bowling, leading to a ₹12 lakh fine for Iyer after that game.
Following the match against CSK, Iyer’s fine has now doubled to ₹24 lakh.
However, the penalty is unlikely to dampen Iyer’s spirits. His team achieved a significant victory against CSK, and he played a crucial role by scoring a brisk half-century.
In the match, Punjab opted to bowl after winning the toss. CSK, batting first, scored 209 runs for the loss of 5 wickets, thanks to Ayush Mhatre’s 73, Shivam Dube’s 45, and Sarfaraz Khan’s 32 runs.
Punjab chased down the target, scoring 210 runs for 5 wickets in 18.4 overs, with contributions from Priyansh Arya (39), Prabhsimran (43), and captain Shreyas Iyer (50).
With this victory, Punjab has secured the top position in the points table.
