Mumbai, April 3: The long-standing issue of dilapidated and unsafe LIC buildings in South Mumbai may soon be resolved. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has assured that the matter will be addressed promptly. This information was shared by Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha on Friday.
During a meeting with the Finance Minister in the national capital, Lodha presented a memorandum on behalf of the LIC Tenants and Residents Welfare Association.
Lodha highlighted that several old and crumbling buildings related to LIC and Dena Bank are located in South Mumbai. Hundreds of tenants are living in unsafe conditions in these structures, some of which are nearly 90 years old. Following notices issued by MHADA, many tenants have already vacated these premises.
In the meeting with the Finance Minister, he raised the concerns of the tenants. According to the tenants’ association, there has been significant delay in the redevelopment process, particularly in appointing a Project Management Consultant (PMC), which is still pending.
LIC officials have indicated that this process could take up to two years. With the monsoon approaching, this delay is causing fear and insecurity among the tenants.
Keeping these issues in mind, Sitharaman assured that a positive resolution would be achieved within the next three months.
In this regard, the association has put forth several key demands. These include the immediate completion of the PMC appointment process, providing interim alternative housing to tenants as per MHADA guidelines, ensuring tenant participation in selecting experienced developers for redevelopment, a temporary suspension of rent for vacated buildings, and not imposing any additional financial or legal burdens on tenants.
