Ahmedabad’s Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC), located at Civil Medical Campus, has emerged as the leading government hospital in India for kidney transplants.
In 2025, IKDRC successfully performed 502 kidney transplants, setting a national record. The transplant procedures included 157 cadaver transplants, 90 swap transplants, 49 pediatric transplants, and 43 robotic kidney transplants. Among these, 170 patients came from other states.
Dr. Pranjal Modi, Director of IKDRC, shared that along with 502 kidney transplants, the centre carried out 86 liver transplants in 2025. Most of these surgeries were conducted under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY). He added that 332 patients were from Gujarat, while 170 were from other states, all receiving comprehensive treatment.
The highly skilled medical team at IKDRC uses advanced technology in kidney transplantation. Dr. Modi, who is also the Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Transplant University, noted a steady increase in robotic kidney transplants at the institute.
Since February last year, the Gujarat government has made robotic transplants free of cost. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the robotic surgery facility, and the centre has completed 43 robotic kidney transplants so far. This year, the target is to perform around 150 robotic kidney transplants.
IKDRC focuses on providing affordable healthcare services to the underprivileged sections of society. In 2025, 318 transplants were conducted under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. Patients and their caregivers confirmed that kidney transplants at the centre are free of charge.
Rajabhai Gogra, father of a kidney patient, expressed gratitude, saying no expense was incurred during treatment as all costs were covered by the government. Similarly, kidney patient Abhishek Kushwaha from Sabarkantha appreciated the government’s efforts, thanking the Prime Minister and Chief Minister for their support.
Besides kidney transplants, IKDRC has also become a key centre for liver transplants, performing 86 liver transplants in 2025. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the Gujarat Health Department, IKDRC continues to lead in advanced medical technology and sets an example for other medical institutions across the country.
