New Delhi, April 2: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla shortly after returning from New Delhi on Thursday. Prior to this meeting, he had discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding various state issues.
According to an official from the Chief Minister’s office, CM Singh also held separate meetings with senior administrative and military officials to discuss critical security matters.
Sources indicate that the meeting between the Chief Minister and the Governor primarily focused on the current law and order situation in Manipur.
Local media reports suggest that this meeting could also be related to a potential expansion of the state cabinet, as there are currently seven vacant ministerial positions.
Sources revealed that the Chief Minister informed the Governor about recent security developments, including a proposal to form an additional battalion of the Manipur Rifles (a women’s unit of the India Reserve Battalion). This initiative aims to enhance the state’s policing capabilities and follows assurances received from the Union Home Minister.
It is noteworthy that CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh was called to Delhi by the Union Home Minister on March 31.
According to the CMO official, during a meeting held in Parliament on Wednesday, Home Minister Amit Shah directed the acceleration of the ongoing peace process in Manipur and encouraged improved relations among various communities.
The official stated, “The Home Minister reviewed the current security situation in Manipur and instructed the Chief Minister to expedite peace efforts and strengthen coordination among communities.”
During the meeting, the Home Minister also granted in-principle approval for the formation of a women’s battalion of the Manipur Rifles and requested the Chief Minister to submit a formal proposal for it.
Earlier, on February 22, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met with Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and L. Susindro to discuss several key issues, including the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons affected by ethnic violence.
