Bhopal, April 2: In a recent statement, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar has criticized the Madhya Pradesh government for the increasing challenges faced by Congress legislators. He accused the ruling party of engaging in power abuse.
Singhar linked the growing difficulties of the legislators to the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for May. He claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) intentions are becoming increasingly clear, as they attempt to lure and buy off Congress legislators to secure electoral victories. When these efforts fail, the government resorts to weaponizing old cases against them.
Commenting on the recent court ruling involving Datia MLA Rajendra Bharti, Singhar pointed out the disparity in treatment. He noted that Bharti was sentenced in a 25-year-old case and arrested in Delhi, while former BJP MLA Narottam Mishra’s pending paid news case has lingered in the Supreme Court for years. This, he argued, highlights a clear double standard.
He further mentioned that Mukesh Malhotra, the Congress MLA from Vijaypur (Shyopur), was disqualified, preventing him from voting in the Rajya Sabha elections. The sudden revival of old cases against Semaria MLA Abhay Mishra and Bhopal Central MLA Arif Masood indicates the BJP’s desperation for power. Singhar asserted that these events are indicative of a conspiracy to eliminate legislators who resist BJP pressure through false or outdated legal actions. This, he stated, is not democracy but a blatant example of power abuse.
Singhar concluded by asserting that the BJP’s attempts to intimidate, punish, and disqualify legislators to win elections demonstrate their reliance on coercion and conspiracy rather than public trust. He reminded that history shows such tactics do not endure, and the public is watching, ready to respond when the time comes.
