Chennai, June 25: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will begin her two-day official visit to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Thursday. During this visit, she will launch a heritage book in Tamil Nadu and inaugurate a restored lighthouse in Puducherry.
Sitharaman arrived in Chennai from New Delhi on Wednesday evening, where she was welcomed by BJP leaders and party workers at the airport.
The first major event of her trip will be the release of the book “Daughters of Kanchi – The SSKV Story” at the SSKV College of Arts and Science for Women in Kanchipuram. This book details the institution’s history and contributions, highlighting its role in promoting women’s education and empowerment in the region.
In addition to the book launch, Sitharaman is expected to engage with students, educators, and local community members as part of her educational and public outreach initiatives in Kanchipuram district.
Kanchipuram holds special significance for the Finance Minister; she has frequently referenced the region’s renowned handloom heritage on national platforms. Recently, while presenting the central budget, she wore a handwoven deep magenta-maroon Kanchipuram silk saree, intricately adorned with gold zari work. This choice was seen as a tribute to the traditional weaving community of the temple town.
Following her events in Tamil Nadu, Sitharaman will travel to Puducherry, where she will inaugurate the restored historic lighthouse at the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Commissionerate campus at 5:30 PM. This restoration project aims to preserve an important historical site from the colonial era and enhance its heritage significance.
On Friday, the Finance Minister will also inaugurate the 400-year-old ‘Mujhiyankulam’ after its restoration at a government middle school in Puducherry. This initiative is part of a broader effort to preserve heritage buildings while improving community infrastructure and public spaces.
This two-day visit underscores the central government’s ongoing commitment to education development, cultural heritage preservation, and community engagement through significant projects in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
