Kolkata, July 1: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has accused the previous Trinamool Congress government, led by Mamata Banerjee, of issuing fake caste certificates on a large scale. He warned that his government is determined to imprison those involved in both obtaining and issuing these fraudulent documents.
Adhikari made these remarks during a government event celebrating ‘Hul Diwas’ in Mukutmanipur, a tribal-dominated area of the Bankura district. This day is observed annually to commemorate the historic Santhal rebellion of 1855.
While addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister stated, “The previous Trinamool Congress government did nothing for the development of the tribal population in West Bengal. The tribal community has been left behind. There was rampant corruption in caste-related matters, especially concerning Scheduled Tribe certificates, leading to the issuance of numerous fake certificates. Now, those who obtain and issue such fraudulent caste certificates will be sent to jail.”
He also referenced an incident earlier this year where President Droupadi Murmu was insulted during her visit to the state for an international Santhal conference.
“The previous Trinamool Congress government showed no hesitation in disrespecting the President of India. They did not allocate sufficient funds for tribal development, but our government is committed to ensuring the welfare of the tribal community. A total of ₹350 crores has been allocated for tribal development. Additionally, ₹1200 crores have been earmarked in the budget for the development of the Jungle Mahal area. Our government is dedicated to the progress of tribals and indigenous people,” he added.
In the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party performed notably well in constituencies where tribal voters play a decisive role. In all 16 constituencies reserved for Scheduled Tribes, BJP candidates emerged victorious. Currently, there are 17 elected representatives from tribal backgrounds in West Bengal.
