New Delhi, July 1: The President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), Suni Joseph, has sharply criticized the BJP-led administration in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. He stated that the violence and disorder witnessed in this local body have become a source of shame for Kerala.
Joseph, who also serves as the state’s Electricity Minister, noted that the functioning of the corporation has deteriorated since the BJP took charge. He claimed that the administration, which was already plagued by chaos during the CPI(M) era, has worsened under BJP governance, with repeated incidents of violence emerging from the council.
During a council meeting on Monday, Joseph referred to a brawl that occurred, alleging that UDF parliamentary party leader K.S. Sabarinadhan was assaulted. He also accused a BJP councilor of making derogatory remarks about Sabarinadhan’s deceased father, G. Karthikeyan, a senior Congress leader.
Furthermore, Joseph reported that UDF women councilors S. Shirley and Anita Alex were attacked during the violence and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. He condemned the behavior of CPI(M) and BJP councilors, likening it to that of street thugs, and demanded strict legal action against those responsible for the violence.
Joseph accused both the BJP and left parties of jointly ignoring civic issues affecting the residents of the capital. He highlighted that with the onset of the monsoon, the city is grappling with diseases, waterlogging, and other rain-related problems, while thousands struggle to meet their basic daily needs.
Instead of addressing these pressing issues, he criticized the corporation council for passing 640 agenda items in just five minutes during their first meeting after a 46-day hiatus, calling it a grossly irresponsible act.
The KPCC chief also alleged that the BJP has lowered its standards in an attempt to defend one of its councilors, who is facing charges under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) and is implicated in several criminal cases. Joseph stated, “People are now witnessing the true face of the BJP since they took control of the corporation.”
