Farmers Protest in Uttarakhand Suspended, Warning Issued for Dehradun March

New Delhi, August 23: The Indian Farmers Union (Tikait faction) has suspended its three-day protest across six districts in Uttarakhand. Farmer leaders submitted an eight-point demand memorandum to the administration and are now awaiting a meeting with the District Magistrate on Monday. They have warned that if their demands are not met within the stipulated time, they will organize a tractor march from Khatima to encircle Dehradun in a month.

A farmer leader stated, “Our three-day protest was held in six districts of Uttarakhand. We have submitted our eight-point demands to the DM. The government will work on our memorandum, and we have given them time to address our issues. If they fulfill our demands, we will thank them; if not, we will prepare for Dehradun. All officials assured us that they would address the administrative matters. They mentioned that they would send our memorandum, as these are policy decisions.”

Another farmer leader added that the protest was pre-planned for three days and received strong support from farmers. There was a question about why the DM did not attend. The administration explained that there were serious issues at home, but they could come later if needed.

He mentioned that the farmers decided to submit the memorandum to the CDO. The issue is not about whom we give the memorandum to but rather that the government takes our demands seriously. Officials assured us that there would be a meeting with the DM at three o’clock on Monday to discuss our memorandum and the timeline for addressing our demands.

The farmer leader indicated that if the government does not listen, the committee will hold a meeting in Rudrapur to set a date for a tractor march from Khatima exactly one month later. They plan to encircle Dehradun in a manner similar to how farmers surrounded Delhi five years ago. They have a month and a half to fulfill our demands; otherwise, we will protest indefinitely.

An official stated that the Tikait faction of the farmers’ union had organized the protest. They submitted a memorandum of demands, which we forwarded to the government yesterday and are doing so again today. We assured them that the District Magistrate would meet with them in the collectorate hall on Monday. We will consider resolving as many district-level issues as possible.
