Sivni, March 7: The renowned senior tigress PN-20, known as the ‘Lungdi Tigress,’ has passed away at the Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh. Her death was attributed to old age and physical weakness. The management of Pench conducted her last rites with respect, following established protocols. This tigress was well-known among tourists.
PN-20, born in 2008, was one of the oldest tigers in the Pench Tiger Reserve, living for nearly 18 years, a record for the reserve. She was found deceased near the Munara camp in the Karmajhiri range around 10:30 AM on Saturday. The last sighting of PN-20 by visitors was on March 6, 2026. Over time, her health had declined, leading to her demise due to age-related issues. She was the sister of the world-famous ‘Collarwali’ tigress and roamed approximately 70% of the Karmajhiri area.
Due to a congenital defect in her front paw, she walked with a slight limp, earning her the nickname ‘Lungdi Tigress.’ In her later years, she could no longer hunt for herself but managed to survive on prey left by other tigers or leopards. Throughout her life, PN-20 gave birth to ten cubs, significantly contributing to the tiger population in and around the Pench Tiger Reserve.
The Chief Conservator of Forests in Sivni and the management of the Pench Tiger Reserve bid her a heartfelt farewell. Following the guidelines set by the NTCA, a senior wildlife veterinarian and local animal doctor conducted a post-mortem and cremation for PN-20.
PN-20 had given birth to ten cubs, with the first two female cubs born in December 2012. She later had three cubs (one male, two female) in 2016, four male cubs in 2019, and one female cub in 2021.
