Mumbai, May 2: With the monsoon season approaching, the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai has accelerated its preparations. In this context, Mayor Ritu Tawde inspected various drainage cleaning operations across the city and instructed officials to complete the work on time.
During her inspection near Mahul Nala, in front of Vasantdada College, Mayor Tawde noted that this area falls under BMC’s Zone 5, where extensive cleaning of the drains is required.
She mentioned that the target is to remove approximately 3,364 metric tons of drain waste from this location. However, the contractor has not started the work on schedule. So far, only 869 metric tons of waste have been removed, which is significantly below the target.
The Mayor expressed her frustration over the slow progress and directed the concerned officials and contractors to expedite the work. She emphasized the importance of completing the cleaning of all drains before the monsoon to prevent flooding issues in the city. Every year, heavy rainfall leads to waterlogging in many areas of Mumbai, disrupting daily life, and this year, special vigilance is being exercised to avoid such problems.
Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a new initiative to enhance transparency in cleaning operations. Digital dashboards will be installed at the waste removal sites, providing real-time information on the amount of sludge removed and the progress of the work. This will not only simplify monitoring but also help prevent any irregularities.
The Mayor expressed confidence that the cleaning of drains would be completed within the stipulated timeframe, significantly alleviating the flooding issues during the rains.
Municipal officials stated that special attention is being given to pre-monsoon preparations this year, with all departments instructed to work in coordination. The cleaning will be completed before the onset of the monsoon to ensure that residents do not face any inconvenience.
