Investigation officer ASI Chuttan Lal said that the private college professor, a resident of Pratap Nagar, reported the matter. A few days ago, the professor received a call from a man claiming to be Head Constable Dataram from Gandhi Nagar police station. The caller claimed that the police had detained a person named Sunil and that the professor’s number was found in Sunil’s call details. The caller threatened that the professor’s name would be included in the chargesheet and asked him to visit the station, warning of defamation and arrest if he did not comply.

The caller then instructed the professor to contact him on WhatsApp. On WhatsApp, the fraudster demanded ₹25,000 to remove the professor’s name. Wanting to avoid trouble, the professor transferred ₹15,000 online and promised to pay the remaining ₹10,000 in person at Gandhi Nagar police station the next day. The caller then asked the professor to meet him at the college’s gate number 2, took him to his car, and had him transfer the remaining ₹10,000.

Later, the caller again asked the professor to meet him at the police station. The professor, becoming suspicious, requested the caller’s ID, which was not provided. When the professor mentioned filing a police complaint, the caller assured a refund. After repeated requests and mention of an FIR, the fraudster transferred ₹10,000 back online but failed to return the remaining ₹15,000, promising to send it in a few days but not doing so. The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
