WhatsApp Expands Voice Chat Feature to All Group Chats with End-to-End Encryption

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has officially rolled out its voice chat feature to all group chats, expanding a capability that was previously limited to large groups. This move enables seamless, secure audio conversations without the need to initiate a traditional group voice call. The newly expanded feature is available now for both Android and iOS users, although full global availability may take a few more days.

Voice Chats Now Available in All Group Sizes

With this update, WhatsApp users can initiate a voice chat within any group—regardless of size—without disrupting ongoing conversations. To start a voice chat, users simply swipe up from the bottom of the group chat until they see the “Swipe up to chat” prompt. Holding for a few seconds will bring up the “Release to talk” message, followed by the “Connect” option to start the session.

One of the key features of this update is its non-intrusive nature. Starting a voice chat does not ring or notify other members in the group. Instead, participants can join or leave the voice chat at their convenience. The ongoing voice chat is pinned at the bottom of the chat window, making it easily accessible and allowing users to monitor who is active in the session.

Secure Communication with End-to-End Encryption

As with all WhatsApp communications, voice chats come with default end-to-end encryption. This ensures that only the participants in the chat can hear the conversation—neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access its contents. The platform reiterated its commitment to user privacy, emphasizing that these security measures are in line with those already applied to personal messages and calls.

A Step Toward Richer Group Communication

The introduction of this feature is part of a broader effort by WhatsApp to enhance group communication. It follows recent developments like improved media auto-download quality selection, sticker reactions, and on-device message translation. With real-time voice chat capabilities, WhatsApp is positioning itself as more than just a text-based platform, aiming to rival dedicated voice chat apps with an added layer of convenience and privacy.

Users are encouraged to update their WhatsApp app to the latest version to access this feature. If the voice chat option is not yet visible, it may appear in the coming days as the rollout progresses.
