Bhubaneswar, June 24: In a shocking incident in Puri, Odisha, the main suspect in the murder of a hotel owner was severely injured during a police encounter. Superintendent of Police (SP) Pratik Singh reported that the accused was shot during a confrontation with law enforcement on Wednesday.
Speaking to the media, SP Singh stated, “We received information late Tuesday night about an incident at Hotel Manorama on Dhabaleswar Road, near Baliapanda police station. The hotel owner, approximately 45-year-old Pabitra Nayak, was allegedly attacked by a group of individuals around 1 AM and stabbed.”
He further revealed that one of the suspects, Chandan Kumar Palaar, who worked as a staff member at the hotel, was identified as the attacker.
Upon receiving the report, police swiftly responded, with Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Sangeeta Das and her team arriving at the scene immediately.
Unfortunately, the victim was transported to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Puri, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
SP Singh noted that the police began gathering evidence from the crime scene, hotel staff, and other witnesses. Deputy SP Prashant Sahu, Inspector Sangeeta Das, and other officers initiated an investigation to collect evidence against all involved parties.
Later, authorities received information that Chandan Kumar Palaar was attempting to hide near a cashew orchard close to the famous Mathamath monastery in Puri. Acting on this tip-off, the Baliapanda IIC and her team approached the area to apprehend him. However, Palaar suddenly opened fire on the officers. In self-defense, the police returned fire, injuring Palaar in the leg.
The wounded suspect was promptly taken to Puri DHH for first aid and later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further treatment.
SP Singh also confirmed that a murder case has been filed regarding the incident that occurred on Tuesday night, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other suspects involved in the crime.
