Agartala, June 29: Authorities reported that Tripura police arrested eight Bangladeshi nationals during two separate operations at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala. These arrests were made based on intelligence that indicated a suspicious attempt to travel to other parts of India. The police have initiated a comprehensive investigation into a potential infiltration network.
A senior police officer stated that the arrests were made following specific intelligence received by the airport police. The police had credible information that four Bangladeshi nationals would arrive at MBB Airport on June 26 and attempt to board a flight to another state.
The officer explained, “Acting on the intelligence and with the assistance of MBB Airport officials, we apprehended all four individuals before they could board their flight.” The four suspects were taken to the airport police station for questioning, where investigators uncovered information regarding the possible involvement of others.
Based on the information gathered during the interrogation, police conducted another intelligence operation at the airport on June 27, leading to the arrest of four additional Bangladeshi nationals. This brought the total number of apprehended individuals to eight over the two-day operation.
Four of the accused were presented in a local court on Sunday, while the remaining four are still in police custody. Authorities have requested a five-day remand for the latter group to facilitate further questioning and to uncover the larger network behind their illegal entry and movement within the country.
Initial investigations indicate that the arrested individuals had planned to travel to Guwahati. However, investigators are now examining their entire travel itinerary, the route they allegedly took to enter India, and whether an organized cross-border network assisted their infiltration and subsequent movement across various regions.
The officer confirmed that the routes used for their entry into India and the identities of those who aided them are currently being verified. “We expect to gather more crucial information during the police remand,” he added.
The police have also seized personal belongings from the suspects, including mobile phones and other items. These will be examined for digital and forensic evidence to help identify accomplices and facilitators linked to the infiltration network.
The officer confirmed that all eight arrested individuals are male. Investigations are ongoing to identify others who may have assisted in the alleged cross-border infiltration and arranged their movement within India.
Tripura shares an 856-kilometer border with Bangladesh and is surrounded by the neighboring country on three sides. This makes the northeastern state particularly sensitive and vulnerable to issues related to cross-border migration. Most of the border is fenced to prevent illegal movement of smugglers, infiltrators, and other hostile elements.
A Border Security Force (BSF) official noted that since violence erupted in Bangladesh in June-July last year, particularly following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, 2024, the paramilitary force has intensified monitoring along the international border and strengthened its presence.
Recently, Union Home Minister Shah announced a pilot project for ‘Smart Border Management’ in Tripura. The aim is to enhance surveillance and improve border security using advanced technology.
This initiative is expected to bolster efforts to prevent illegal infiltration and other cross-border crimes while also improving the overall efficiency of border management.
