Eder Militão Advised to Undergo Surgery, FIFA World Cup Hopes Dashed

Madrid, April 26: Eder Militão, the Real Madrid defender, has been advised to undergo surgery for a hamstring injury, effectively ruling him out of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

According to a report by Xinhua, the Brazilian international sustained the injury during Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Deportivo Alavés on Tuesday. He was injured while jumping for a header. Initially, the injury did not appear serious, but a medical examination on Saturday revealed more significant damage.

Real Madrid confirmed on Thursday that tests conducted by the club’s medical team indicated a muscle injury in the biceps femoris of Militão’s left leg. While the club initially stated that his return would depend on the recovery process, early estimates suggested he would be sidelined for about a month, which would exclude him from the remaining La Liga matches but still keep him in contention for international fixtures.

However, the decision to proceed with surgery has significantly extended his recovery time. Militão is now expected to be out of action for approximately four months, nearly eliminating his chances of participating in the upcoming World Cup. This could also impact his availability at the start of the next season.

The 28-year-old defender has faced a challenging period in recent years due to injuries. He has suffered two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and dealt with a hamstring issue in December, which kept him out of action for nearly four months before he returned at the end of March.

This news is a major blow for both Real Madrid and Brazil, as a fully fit Militão is a key player in defense. His absence will require adjustments in Madrid’s defensive lineup as they approach the season’s final stages, while Brazil will need to reassess their defensive options ahead of the global tournament.
