New Delhi, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : The police in East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar have apprehended a man accused of committing ATM fraud. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Asif from Loni, Ghaziabad, allegedly distracted individuals to swap their ATM cards, subsequently withdrawing money from their accounts. Authorities recovered three ATM cards from him during the arrest.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajiv Kumar, Asif has been implicated in six prior criminal cases. The incident unfolded on September 17, when the complainant, Mo. Ghalib Hussain, visited an Axis Bank ATM in Trilokpuri to withdraw cash. During this time, two unknown individuals engaged him in conversation, allowing them to observe his ATM PIN. They then deceitfully exchanged his card for a similar-looking one.
Suspicious, Ghalib checked the card and realized it was not his. He immediately searched nearby ATMs and spotted the same suspects at another Axis Bank ATM in Trilokpuri. When confronted, the duo attempted to flee, but swift police action led to Asif’s capture. An FIR numbered 416/2026 has been registered at the Mayur Vihar police station.
During interrogation, Asif revealed that he targeted individuals who were not well-versed in using ATMs. By engaging them in conversation, he would discreetly view their PIN and swap their cards, later using the stolen cards for unauthorized transactions. Police are currently searching for his accomplice, who remains at large.
This operation was conducted under the supervision of the Mayur Vihar ACP and SHO Inspector Dinesh Morale. Authorities are now working to identify additional victims and investigate any financial transactions related to similar cases. Asif has existing cases registered against him in Krishna Nagar, Mansarovar Park, Burari, Cyber Northeast, Jagatpuri, and Harsh Vihar police stations. His arrest has led to the resolution of two cases, including the Mayur Vihar incident and an e-FIR from the PIA police station.
